This photo was taken in December 2010, just months after we lost Sutton. There was no blog, no crowdfunding and no bins. We sent an email to a group of friends explaining how heartbroken we were for some of the children still at Children’s Hospital and asked them to give. Each and every one of them said yes without any hesitation.
It’s pretty awesome to see how the toy drive has grown and how many new people we have had the chance to meet and connect with. Yesterday I was at an event and had to opportunity to talk about Sutton’s Toy Drive and why we have been doing it for eight years. Just by chance there was a mom attending the event who has a child with a congenital heart condition, as well as other medical challenges, who was kind enough to introduce herself and tell me about her son. Although our stories are different, there are a lot of similarities and a certain perspective. Her brave little boy and family face a lot of challenges and they are why we do this every year.
Helping patients at Children’s Hospital is what we strive to do, but we also believe in making a difference here at home. We want there to be a conversation with families about what it means to be truly thankful for our health, as well as who and what we have in life. This is why we rely solely on our community to help us spread the word. It is such a gift to get texts, calls and emails telling stories of how a family has talked about donating and what kids are willing to do on their own. Just last night, one of my favorite families shared a story of how one of their kids is giving an unopened toy he received as part of our donation to the hospital. That’s a big deal and we couldn’t do what we do without kids like him.
Honestly, this is what it’s all about for us.
So as we head into the last shopping weekend before we deliver toys, please continue to share our story and consider donating by Monday so we can load up a trailer and head to Spokane on Tuesday, December 19th.
